Opportunity knocks: let's kill I-3 once and
for all!
The Stop I-3 Coalition today called on all
residents of north Georgia and the Georgia Piedmont
to redouble efforts to kill a proposed Interstate
3 that is neither needed nor wanted.
“The time is now to contact our two U.S.
Senators and newly elected Rep. Paul Broun to
let them know how we feel about this,” said
Lucy Bartlett, the coalition’s chair. “Dr.
Broun’s election – with
his clear stands against I-3 – make it
plain that Sens. Chambliss and Isakson should
get off the fence on this issue."
Broun won a
close election to replace the late Rep. Charlie
Norwood, who was a key proponent of the proposed
interstate legislation. He also has promised
to sponsor legislation to rescind financing of
the federal study of I-3, a rare window of opportunity
to stop the road now.

All three Georgia congressmen
should be asked specifically to sponsor legislation
to rescind the study money for I-3, The Third
Infantry Division Highway, contained in SAFETEA-LU,
the Transportation Act of 2005, Sections 1702
(2737, 3358, 3956) and 1927. “Not only
is Broun strongly opposed to this interstate,
but also a clear majority of Georgia residents
view this unnecessary highway as fiscally irresponsible,
and environmentally disastrous," Bartlett
concluded.
People opposed to the ruinous interstate
from South Carolina, North Carolina and Tennessee
should contact their own representatives to ask
for their help in rescinding the study of the
road that would significantly impact their tax
base and environment.
Bartlett also noted that
it is more timely to fax a letter or e-mail a
letter to the federal elected officials than
to use the regular mail system.
