For many bikers and roadsters, the Tail of the Dragon, located along the North Carolina/Tennessee border on US129, is one of the premier roads in this country to ride.  “Slaying the Dragon” is a dream accomplishment for many. 

However, there is a new twist to the term “Slaying the Dragon” that is far too literal.  There is a move afoot to put an interstate right through it! 

The money for a feasibility study has already been approved by Congress to initiate the process of creating an interstate that will go from Savannah, GA to Knoxville, TN.  The original route proposed would take it along US129, a section of which is known as “The Tail of the Dragon.”

It is our mission, and we have decided to accept it, to prevent this road from becoming a reality.

Three rides will be featured; an all-day Saturday Poker run along the Tail of the Dragon, and Saturday scavenger hunts on a morning ride and an afternoon ride.  The ½ day rides will be repeated on Sunday for those who wish to enjoy more of the Southern Appalachian Mountains.  These rides are to raise money to stop Interstate 3 which in the original route will eliminate the Tail of the Dragon.  As the Federal Highway Administration gears up to start the study of this corridor, we need to let them know loud and clear that we don’t want a four-lane highway to interstate standards to destroy this classic motorcycle run.

Pre-registration costs are $30 for riders, $25 for passengers.  Registration on day of run is $35 for riders, $30 for passengers. Persons pre-registering will receive a free pin commemorating the ride.  Saturday night will feature a party with music, food, and prizes at Cherokee County Cycles in Andrews, NC.
