Partial transcript of interview re Interstate 3:

Richard Belcher (WSB-TV): “Conservationists say the damage would be irreparable.”

Gatins: “People in Atlanta need to wake up to the fact that it is not just being widened here [highway 441, where they are shown walking, south of Clayton, Ga.] but it’s [Interstate 3 would be] going to be widened three times as wide right through their mountains.…”This road [Interstate 3], wherever it goes, if it is ever built, will destroy a way of life … will destroy the environment that is of benefit and of joy ...to millions of Americans.”

Reporter: “The concept is interesting. It’d be an easy way to move big trucks through …. [unintelligible]. The tourist travelers enjoy the two-lanes.”

Bartlett: “...Noise, fumes and constant traffic. People do not come here to see interstates and Cracker Barrels and McDonald’s. They come here for the mountains, for the views, a chance to relax and get away. If we’re building roads all over the mountains, then there won’t be any place to rest and get away.”
