I-3 study receives funding boost

The $286.4 billion highway bill passed by Congress early
Friday contained an unexpected surprise for supporters of
a proposed interstate that would link Knoxville, Tenn., with
Savannah, Ga.
A feasibility study on Interstate 3 earmarked in the bill
by Rep. Charlie Norwood, R-Ga., received $1.32 million, $900,000
higher than his original request.
Stop I-3, a coalition opposed to the Interstate plowing through
the northeast Georgia mountains, immediately sought an explanation
for the dramatic increase.
"It is very interesting to us that the increase has
been tripled," Ms. Wells said. "We want to know
why."
Rep. Norwood's spokesman John Stone said it was "great
news for the south."
The study will investigate routing, costs, benefits, environmental
and archaeological impact and economic development, Mr. Stone.
The feasibility study's original December deadline
also was lifted, but a new one was not set, he said.
The Stop I-3 coalition has a meeting planned at White County
High School on Aug. 23 to discuss Interstate 3 with the community.
Local county officials already are familiarizing themselves
with the possible affect of the interstate.
Larry Glasco, Habersham County economic development director,
has voiced his support for widening existing roads, such as
U.S. 365, to interstate standards to avoid the cost and hassle
of major new road construction through the mountains.
Although officials are aware of environmental concerns, they
also anticipate potential economic benefits of the interstate.
