Commission says 'no' to I-3
by Jenée Wilde
The Habersham County Commission has agreed to send a formal
letter to state elected officials expressing the board's opposition
to the proposed Interstate 3. "I think the board should
indicate as a whole in writing that we do not need an interstate
in Habersham County," Chairperson Lynne Dockery said
at Monday's commission meeting. "My question to the attorney
is can we pass a resolution forbidding it?" said commissioner
Doug Vermilya. "Or do they have bigger guns than we do?"
Commissioner Jim Butterworth said a letter writing campaign
has a greater effect early in the process, before legislation
is passed.
"If it gets beyond that, it will be an uphill battle,"
Butterworth said.
In addition to the letter, commissioners agreed to put petitions
opposing the freeway in county offices.
In March, U.S. Sens. Saxby Chambliss and Johnny Isakson introduced
amendments to the national highway funding bill seeking money
to study two new interstate routes through Georgia. While
one interstate would run east-west from Augusta to Mississippi,
the other proposed Interstate 3 would link Savannah
with Knoxville, Tenn.
Proposed routing plans say Interstate 3 generally would follow
Highway 17 through Toccoa, Clarkesville, Helen and Hiawassee.
