"STOP I-3" presented to Rotarians

by Rainer Arnold, Sentinel Writer

Janet McCallen

Janet McCallen of the Towns County Homeowners Association speaking to the Lake Chatuge-Hiawassee Rotary Club

The biggest controversy in this area in recent years is the proposed I-3 which is presently being talked about and studied by a variety of agencies, private and government. This Interstate is proposed to run from Savannah via Augusta to Knoxville. During this routing it is to possibly go through White and Towns County.

However, at this time, nothing is certain, but Janet McCallen, of the Towns County Homeowners Association does not want to take any chances and thus she has agreed to speak to a variety of groups about the proposed I-3 that could possibly destroy the beauty of the mountains that are so enjoyable to everyone in this area.

In her address to the Lake Chatuge-Hiawassee Rotary Club, McCallen stated, "This proposal is part of the Transportation Equity Act." This Act was originally proposed by Former Representative Max Burns who has since been defeated. Now, Congressman Charlie Norwood has given this measure his support.

According to McCallen there is a feasibility study being conducted at this time. In a recent meeting, about 650 interested persons heard that this proposed interstate would probably not come within 5-10 miles of Highway 76. This close proximity, according to McCallen could be devastating to this area.

Studies have shown that small towns close to interstates have shriveled up and died. The only areas that survive are small commercial pockets near the exits of the interstates.

McCallen also noted that the integrity of our watersheds, diversity and health of our forests, scenic beauty of this area, and the quality of life as we all know it, all that would come to an end.

After all, according to McCallen, most of the people in this area came to Towns County to get away from interstate traffic, pollution and crime. And, this proposal of an interstate through this area will bring all that residents wanted to leave behind, back into their lives.

McCallen and the Towns County Homeowners Association is dedicated to not allow this to happen.

For more information on this proposed I-3, please contact McCallen through the TCHA at P.O. Box 455, Hiawassee, GA  30546 or check them out on www.stopi-3.org <http://www.stopi-3.org/> .
