Re: Interstate 3 Information for your review

Sirs:

We would like to present you with the enclosed documents related to the Interstate 3 proposal. As you may know, the recently signed transportation bill funds a 1.3 million dollar feasibility study for an Interstate connecting Savannah and Knoxville by way of Augusta. No specific route is mentioned in the legislation, but past routing guidelines published by the Georgia congressmen have mentioned US 64 and US 129 through Western North Carolina.

We feel it is very important for Clay, Cherokee, and Graham County residents and local governments to take this proposal seriously and defeat it early. Construction may be years away, but the feasibility study should begin soon and if it is found to be feasible, the project could gain momentum and could actually be built at great cost to our existing road networks, farms, and businesses, and with disastrous consequences for our forests, watersheds, wildlife, and natural beauty.

You may know that three different county commissions in North Georgia—in Rabun, Habersham, and White Counties—have gone on record opposing Interstate 3 in response to popular opposition. This has apparently had an effect on the Congressional proponents of the proposal as they have removed the specific routing language from the transportation bill and tried to get everyone to ignore what’s going on until the study is completed. However, Federal Highway Administration guidelines call for a great deal of public involvement in the Feasibility Study process and we intend to be engaged throughout the study. County governments will certainly be listened to should they decide to participate.

The documents enclosed here include information from members of Congress (left pocket) and research papers, position papers, and press coverage (right pocket). Please let us know if there is anything else you would like to see to help you form an opinion about the interstate proposal.

On Thursday, August 18 from 7-9 PM at Tri-County Community College, Western Carolina Pacesetters will sponsor a public information meeting on Interstate 3 with speakers and question/comment session. You should have already received an invitation to this event as invited guests. We hope you will be able to come and hear from elected officials, NC DOT officials, experts on watersheds, nuclear transport, and the feasibility study process, and citizens about how Interstate 3 might affect our mountains.

Thank you so much for your kind consideration.

For the Stop I-3 Coalition Chapter,

John Clarke
Chair
