Save mountains for future generations to enjoy

To the editor:
In response to Mr. Jack Turpin's letter calling for the building
of Interstate 3 (Sept. 29), I totally disagree.
Mr. Turpin, you write clearly and very well. I see your point.
I strongly disagree with you, and I, too, may never be around
to see the thing built - I am 63 years old.
It is so critical for you and everyone else to see that this
is not about us. This is about the health and goodness of
these beautiful mountains.
You stated that a tree isn't planted for ones-self, but for
others ... Why tear down trees in the first place?
Why not let the trees remain to grow to maturity?
Why can we not preserve these hills and not tear anything
away?
Don't just live for today; you are right. Live for tomorrow,
and for the children of future generations, I pray they will
enjoy these mountains just as I have.
Now, if a person cannot wait in line to see these hills,
then they don't need to come here. We have already paid a
very high price for the privilege of getting up here to see
them.
Please, let's not put in a destructive, four-lane expressway
all the way through the Smokies to Knoxville.
Mr. Turpin, you are a very selfish person to want to do that.
I realize you want it for future folks, but that is selfish,
not sacrificial. Obviously, you aren't aware of what you are
asking. On top of destroying habitat forever and the possible
loss of certain species of fauna, plant life and or animals,
you think it will recover from the scars.
No Mr. Turpin, these hills would never recover from such
a devastation.
We need employment, it is true. But, we cannot under any
circumstances, sell our soul to commerce and destroy what
God Almighty has given to us to enjoy forever ... Amen.
