Our True Wealth
Letter to the Editor
Clayton Tribune, July 7, 2005
I hope everyone can attend the Co. Commission meeting this
Thursday night. While we are enjoying our cool summer here
our leaders and representatives in Washington are meeting
with their corporate cohorts to decide again what's good for
us. This time it's a new interstate highway from Savannah
through Rabun County to Knoxville.
For the powerful and the rich politics is the serious business
of manipulating power and money. For the other 95% of us it
is an opportunity, a forum, even an obligation, to speak truth
to power and money. Part of that truth is this: the true wealth
of our community here in Rabun County is the health of our
environment and our relationship to it. This interstate will
cut right through our mountains, separating still one more
part from another, exacting one more dismemberment of our
national heritage. Is this good for us in Rabun County, good
for our region, good for our nation?
In a democracy we are often called upon to make personal
sacrifices for the greater good. But these mountains are a
precious good for the whole nation. All but the most cynical
would admit that the works of God are good. And these mountains
are certainly part of His good work. For all we know it might
be an essential part. It's only self delusion to think that
we can steal just this little bit away for ourselves and He
won't mind, or notice. We are not the Lords of Creation, but
its children. The Bible says our special relationship is to
be caretakers of His Creation.
Here's an opportunity to be so: go to that meeting. Listen
with an open heart. Stand up and bear witness to our responsibility
as caretakers of this marvelous piece of Creation we call
home.
