Interstate
3 is unneeded, unwanted
Letter to the Editor, The
Northeast Georgian
June 10, 2005
I am writing in response to Representative [Charlie] Norwood's
proposed new Interstate 3.
This idea represents classic 20th century thinking. Unfortunately,
we are now in the 21st century and are in desperate need of
leadership and ideas that are in-step with this new century.
For the last 32 years, since the 1973 Arab Oil Embargo, Congress
has played the ostrich game, preferring to hide from the obvious.
But for Congress to ignore the realities of a post-9/11 world
where the United States is now even more vulnerable to blackmail,
coercion and economic disruption caused by our dependence
on outdated oil technology is pure folly bordering on criminal
negligence.
The millions of taxpayer dollars he proposes for another
unneeded/unwanted highway would be much better spent addressing
our oil dependency and developing new alternative energy sources.
That money should not be spent "in the name of the people"
to support the needs of the oil companies, automobile manufacturers
and state highway departments.
Next year, Rep. Norwood is again up for re-election. If he
cannot join the rest of us in the 21st century with new ideas
and approaches to our problems, I suggest that we elect someone
who will.
And if he makes the mistake of thinking that the voters in
this district don't have long memories, I suggest that he
simply ask Roy Barnes.
