Don't
let interstate rip through county
Letter to the Editor, The
Northeast Georgian
June 10, 2005
I am saddened to think that we will sit by and let another
interstate rip through our communities.
If you have traveled to Clayton recently you will observe
workers tearing down the mountains on one side of the road
to use as fill on the other side. It is a huge mess that is
not only unsightly but is rapidly filling up the lakes and
streams with mud. Now the folks coming to see the leaves in
the fall can move along faster. The landscape has changed
forever.
One of the beautiful things about Clarkesville is the lack
of highway running through it. The Sautee Valley is sacred
[not just around the Indian mound]. If people want to visit
the mountains they will come.
When will we see a leader come forth who truly cares about
our future? Why is it not a priority to develop energy sources
instead of remaining dependent? This road will not benefit
you and me, but it is great for the oil companies and the
government.
Sounds like Towns County is buckin' up. Please let your voice
be heard. If we can't stop the interstate we might change
the route.
