Protests might alter I-3 route
Letter to the Editor
White
County NewsTelegraph
January 26, 2006
To the editor:
Several of the observations from Billy Jenkins' interesting
history of roads (Interstate 3 and other roads I've
known, page 6A, Jan. 19 NewsTelegraph) were thought
provoking. While it may be that I-3 is a done deal as to construction,
location is still very much, at this point, open to challenge.
A study of the interstate system shows that the construction
of the road has a set pattern, set in the original birth.
One of those things is first a study of the ramifications
of the road from all aspects. If this study is positive then
the road goes to a location study. Then right of ways are
purchased and finally bids are let for construction.
I also have an interest in maps, and that is how I got interested
in I-3 initially. The route I found in the original proposal
was alarming. I found that it veered considerably off a straight
line from Augusta to Knoxville. Actually the route was to
hook to I-40 west of Knoxville, right at Oak Ridge.
The part of I-3 being challenged by a great deal of public
outcry is the part through the mountains and the National
Forest. Two federally sponsored studies recently done show
an interstate in an area without supporting infrastructure
does not bring any economic changes.
The suggestion is made as to how people sincere in their
oppositionfocus our efforts. This statement made me
wonder if any research on I-3 had been done. If we can affect
where this road goes, our efforts are well worth our time.
I respect anyone's freedom to propose or oppose any project
that would use taxpayer money. It is why America is a great
country. But that position should be made with informed reasoning.
